Professional Background: My professional journey started with Cone Health, where I served as the Recreational Therapist in an acute inpatient behavioral health unit. In this role, I developed a comprehensive Recreational Therapy program, drawing inspiration from my experience working alongside a seasoned therapist in an adolescent behavioral health unit. My responsibilities included conducting thorough assessments for every patient, formulating individualized goals, and facilitating one-on-one sessions to achieve these objectives. Utilizing diverse interventions such as relaxation techniques, psychosocial counseling, and healthy coping skills, I aimed to enhance the well-being of the individuals under my care. Leading two daily leisure-based groups, I focused on honing various skills, including communication, wellness, emotional expression, team building, problem-solving, and coping. Following each session, I guided patients in reflecting on the activity, the skills acquired, and their applicability to life beyond the hospital. I transitioned to UNC Health's North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, where my role as a Recreational Therapist centered on assessing adult burn survivors. My focus encompassed pain and anxiety management, coping with hospitalization and injury, addressing body image concerns, and facilitating community reintegration. Employing interventions such as non-pharmacological techniques, psychosocial counseling, coping skills, and positive affirmations, my mission was to enhance patients' quality of life and instill confidence as they prepared to reintegrate into the community following traumatic events. I also held the position of Certified Phoenix Society Peer Support Volunteer Coordinator, leveraging my expertise to identify the peer support needs of burn patients. This involves educating patients on the peer support program, facilitating suitable matches with peer support volunteers, and orchestrating virtual or in-person meetings between volunteers and patients. Career Transition: Through my personal experiences as a military spouse, I cultivated a passion for aiding military members and their spouses in their pursuit of meaningful employment. Now, I contribute to an exceptional organization that offers free assistance to transitioning military members, veterans, and their families. Personal Interests: Outside of work, I enjoy discovering local coffee and ice cream shops, as well as traveling! My dream travel destination? Bora Bora.
