About Elizabeth Mitchell

At WilmerHale, I help my clients navigate the enforcement, governance, and compliance challenges in today's complex regulatory environment. Leveraging over two decades of experience, I counsel and defend public companies, investment banks, broker-dealers, investment advisers, funds, boards of directors, and individual executives and employees through multi-faceted government investigations and in other sensitive matters. I have represented clients before a wide range of federal and state regulatory agencies and self-regulatory organizations, including the SEC, CFTC, DOJ, FINRA, stock exchanges, and State Attorneys General. I regularly advise clients on compliance with regulations applicable to financial market participants and public companies, corporate governance, disclosure requirements, personnel decisions, crisis management, self-reporting determinations, and effective remediation. I have been recognized for my strategic and pragmatic approach to helping clients achieve their regulatory and business objectives and for my unique combination of public company and securities trading and markets experience. Prior to private practice, I served as a Trial Attorney in the Torts Branch of the United States Department of Justice. In this role, I represented the White House and numerous federal agencies in the government’s litigation against the tobacco industry. I also served as a law clerk to Judge Walter Stapleton of the US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. I actively contribute to my community through my pro bono work and my service on the Board of Legal Counsel for the Elderly, a leading legal services provider to Washington DC’s elderly population, and on the Arlington County Commission for the Arts.
