About Ellen Zarchy

As a Special Education Teacher, I have always worked in urban settings. I have never thought twice about this. I have always felt all children, regardless of their circumstances; deserve a chance at an equal and fair education. I have strived to be that teacher, that change agent. I have always worked hard to address the data,(from portfolios or testing) and learn from what I see and observe. Collecting data on my students helps me gain a better understanding of their progress and helps me to see if I need to move on or remain on a topic that is being taught.The more at risk and special needs children are not challenged, the stronger the achievement gap becomes. The harder then it will be for them to achieve what goals and dreams they may be holding on to. It is imperative to build self- esteem, character and self worth into each student. For every student to achieve what he or she is capable of, a system must be put in place to allow for movement and growth within their learning environment. Teachers need to be positive in order for students to be positive. An enthusiastic and positive approach goes very far in the classroom. I feel I am that teacher. I work tirelessly on ways to better myself professionally. I work to enhance my own pedagogy so I am an effective teacher. I am willing to be challenged. I have not yet achieved all I can as a teacher. I welcome new innovations and ideas and embrace ideas that are going to lead me both professionally and personally as I continue my journey as an educator.
