About Ellie Laton

I am an Honors undergraduate majoring in Biosystems Engineering, Computer Science, and Arabic at the University of Arizona! I have previously worked with the Meredith Lab at Biosphere 2, researching the impact of the Nitrogen cycle on drought-affected rainforest soils. I have also worked as a NASA Space Grant intern with the Field-Sierra Lab, studying reductive degradation of insensitive munition compound mixtures using Iron-based reactive minerals. I also occasionally conduct literature review-based research on various topics related to Environmental Science and Geology for the California-based consulting company,"Earth Forensics". As of now, I am working with the Fitzsimmon's aquaponics greenhouse on a project revolving around the introduction of mussels into a low-cost aquaponics system for the purpose of suspended solids management. I am also a course coordinator for the University of Arizona's Computer Science Department. Overall, I am deeply passionate about issues related to the various environmental adversities that we currently face, and I hope to use my skills to participate in research focused on addressing not just the scientific implications of anthropogenic activities, but also the societal injustices that arise from these issues. I am most interested in Hydrology-oriented endeavors, but I welcome any other opportunity to extend my area of expertise into alternative environmental scopes.
