Background
About Elyon Johnson
Elyon Johnson is a proud Detroit native, a product of Detroit Public Schools, and a transformative leader committed to educational equity and liberation. With over 15 years of experience across urban and virtual school systems, Elyon has led in classrooms, coached teachers and school leaders, and designed systems-level solutions that center students and develop dynamic, equity-driven educators. She began her journey in education as a Teach For America corps member in Charlotte, where she taught Special Education and quickly realized her passion for teaching, coaching, and systems change. Since then, Elyon has taught and led across the country—including North Carolina, Arizona, Illinois, and Michigan—bringing culturally responsive and restorative approaches to every role she’s held. Currently, Elyon serves as the 9–12 Literacy Curriculum Leader in Detroit Public Schools Community District, where she leads curriculum design, professional learning, and coaching for secondary ELA educators. She is the visionary behind the Detroit Perspectives Project, a district-wide initiative rooted in culturally and historically responsive literacy. Previously, she served on Teach For America Detroit’s leadership team, supporting early-career educators and building sustainable leadership pipelines across the region. Elyon holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy, an administrative certification, and has been recognized as a fellow with New Leaders Council Detroit and Teach Michigan’s Aspiring Leaders Fellowship. A natural connector and servant leader, she believes deeply in cultivating transformational school leaders who will reimagine what’s possible for students, schools, and communities in Michigan and beyond.
