About Elyse Sunshine

Elyse Sunshine practices health law, professional liability and general civil litigation. The major focus of Elyse's practice is advocacy on behalf of health care professionals. In this regard, she frequently represents professionals in matters involving various administrative Boards and Tribunals, including committees of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Ontario College of Pharmacists, the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario and the College of Veterinarians of Ontario. Elyse also represents individual health care providers in matters before the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board (i.e. reviews of complaints and hearings concerning physicians' hospital privileges) and the Health Services Appeal and Review Board (such as: decisions of the Director with respect to independent health facilities and billing disputes). As well, Elyse provides opinions and general advice to individuals and organizations, such as associations of health care professionals. She has been active in assisting professional organizations in creating their own regulatory structure and in seeking regulation under the Regulated Health Professions Act. Elyse advocates for her health professional clients in everything from obtaining licensure for their independent health facilities to lobbying for legislative change. She also regularly assists health professionals in preparing for inspections and audits, including peer reviews and other assessments. Elyse frequently presents to health professional groups on issues relating to health law and professional regulation, including topics such as: how to handle an inspection by a regulatory body, implementing professional guidelines and standards, the new privacy legislation, mandatory reporting obligations and navigating the various College committee processes.
