Background
About Emanuele Sessa
I started my career working as a consultant in the international development industry, most notably in Albania, Moldova and Ukraine. I enjoyed it thoroughly but eventually grew quite critical of it. I elaborated my critique into a master thesis and then stayed at the university to teach critical international development studies. My motivation as a lecturer is to ensure students interested in this field become sufficiently knowledgeable, reflexive and responsible to be a force for good in it. As a researcher, I worked for a few years in policy-oriented research about European Union and Euro-Mediterranean affairs for think tanks in Brussels and Barcelona and then returned to academia to pursue a PhD in political and economic geography. My PhD brings together and deepens several topics I touched upon during my time working at think tanks: the geopolitics of European integration and the geoeconomics of global production networks, with a focus on the Western Balkans and specifically Albania.
