About Emils Matiss

I’m a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Queen’s University, where I study how the brain generates movement using spiking neural networks, machine learning, and closed-loop simulations. My research focuses on how neural systems balance flexibility and stability - insights that may inform both neuroscience and control systems design. Beyond the lab, I’m passionate about governance, advocacy, and community service. I recently completed my term as President of the SGPS, where I led major advocacy efforts to preserve graduate student funding, supported by broad collaboration across campus. I now serve on the Queen’s University Board of Trustees and as a Director and Treasurer of the Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre, where I work with a dedicated team to strengthen financial sustainability and deliver major accessibility-focused capital projects. My background spans neuroscience, computer science, and business - fields that together shape how I think about complex systems, leadership, and equitable decision-making. Whether I’m building neural models or working with diverse stakeholders, I strive to listen deeply, lead thoughtfully, and contribute meaningfully.
