About Emily Berenback

I am a licensed professional school counselor at St HOPE Leadership Academy. SHLA is a 5-8 public charter middle school in West Harlem. I have a Master of Education in School Counseling from Hunter College, where I completed my internship and practicum. I interned at TASS Middle School in the East Village, where I provided weekly individual and/or group counseling sessions to a caseload of eighteen students. I also coached the TASS Middle School girls softball team. Prior to the internship, I completed my practicum at Martin Van Buren High School in Queens Village, New York where I provided individual counseling services, classroom guidance lessons, as well as crisis intervention services. My internship and practicum experiences have provided me with knowledge of working as a school counselor at both the middle school and high school levels. Prior to graduate school, I was employed in the social services field providing case management and supervisory services to at-risk adults and adolescents.This experience provided the foundation for my current coursework and future work as a school counselor. I believe the therapeutic relationship between a student and counselor is critically important to have a successful counseling outcome. Many people who seek therapy have had inconsistent or minimal support in their lives, and a reliable, supportive counselor can make a significant difference for a student. Students should be given a voice to make meaningful choices and decisions in their own lives as well as the information and access to community supports so that they are able to maximize and broaden their desires and goals.
