About Emily Brady

In middle school when a tab on a compartment in my violin case broke I immediately thought “how do I solve this problem with the resources available”. My solution, a piece of string tied in a loop that went around the compartment flap. Upon testing my solution, I realized I really enjoyed the aspect of problem solving. Since both of my parents are engineers, I knew engineering would be a good career choice as engineers solve problems for a living. While my B.S. is in Mechanical Engineering, exposure to Failure Analysis and material characterization drew me to Materials Science and Engineering in which I pursued a PhD in. My Ph.D. work focused on understanding the mechanical behavior and resulting microstructure of niobium at elevated temperatures during deformation and static annealing. This involves conducting elevated temperature tensile tests, preparing metal samples for microscopy, collecting microscopy data, and analyzing both mechanical and microscopy data. Currently I am working as a Mechanical Engineering consultant for Exponent where I get to work on unique and challenging problems everyday! When not solving problems, I enjoy reading fantasy/sci-fi novels, sewing, cooking, and hiking. Specialties: tensile testing, metallography, SEM, EBSD, HR-EBSD, MTEX, Matlab, Project Planning, Presenting
