Background
About Emily Carroll
I'm a math professor. I use my background in computer science to make math relevant and exciting for my students, from 6th graders to college students. Prior to my teaching career, I was a computer scientist on the Small Business Innovation Research team at the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). I worked with technical experts, Program Office Science and Technology representatives, and small businesses to insert innovative solutions to Navy problems, developed by small businesses, into programs of record. I also collaborated with NAVAIR software engineers to develop software solutions for SBIR business processes. Prior to my position at the SBIR Program Office, I was a simulation software engineer for NAVAIR, in the Integrated Battlespace Simulation and Test Department. I developed solutions for trainers in the fleet. I worked with customers from many military platforms to provide ongoing software support and develop new software features. As a C++ user interface developer, my role was to understand the mission of each feature, and to design features that match how the users expect to interact with the software. Prior to employment at NAVAIR, I led teams of up to fifteen novice participants in outdoor expeditions and lasting one to seven days while enrolled as a full time student at the University of Maryland. I was responsible for mitigating environmental and medical risks, creating Emergency Action Plans, designing itineraries, educating participants, ensuring safety and comfort of participants, and ensuring a positive customer service experience. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. I am also a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician and Wilderness First Responder. I love to stay in touch with former colleagues, managers, and to help others get connected, so please feel free to contact me.
