Background
About Emily Coffin
I am a Service Designer at Veterans Affairs Canada's Innovation Hub, with over a decade of experience spanning private, public, and non-profit sectors. My expertise lies in tackling complex challenges and providing evidence-based strategic recommendations, with a strong focus on user research. I leverage data and insights to design solutions that align with both user needs and organizational goals. I am also passionate about increasing awareness of human-centered design by developing and delivering training programs across VAC. Before joining the Innovation Hub, I played a key role in shaping the UX strategy and expanding usability testing practices within VAC’s Online Services Directorate. This resulted in a comprehensive, ATIP-approved research process that continues to inform the design of services for Veterans, CAF and RCMP members, and their families. I am dedicated to advocating for user needs and enhancing service experiences for both end-users and staff. My commitment to user research enables me to uncover insights that lead to impactful, user-driven design decisions. Beyond my work at VAC, I have a deep passion for education, mentoring and community involvement. In 2016, I founded a local chapter of Canada Learning Code (formerly Ladies Learning Code) in my hometown, successfully running programming for both children and adults. I also co-led a UX Meetup group, have frequently spoken at local design, tech and startup events. As a member of the neurodiverse community, I bring a unique perspective to my work. My neurodiversity allows me to excel in creative problem-solving, divergent thinking, and fostering deep connections with research participants and colleagues. I am an advocate for mental health and am currently leading the development of a trauma-informed approach for my team, ensuring that our work is conducted with care and compassion. In my free time, I enjoy performing as a musician, playing cover gigs around Charlottetown, and previously ran a photography studio. I unwind through yoga, horseback riding, hiking with my rescue dog, and experimenting in the kitchen.
