About Emily Gawith

I am a graduate of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where I obtained a Bachelor of Social Work. I earned my Kansas social work license in May of 2012. I am looking to work for awhile in the field, while gaining perspective on which area I would like to focus my studies in the future. Preferably, my place of employment would be in Kansas/the Midwest. I am particularly interested in public policy and poverty, but find any area pertaining to the social/public service sector worthwhile. I currently work as a Child Protective Services social worker. It is challenging and difficult work. I have learned much and gained a great deal of valuable experience, but will be looking to move on to something different in the near future. My previous job, administering the job search program for recipients of state cash benefits, was very rewarding and a great learning experience for a novice social worker. Prior to that, I worked for the Douglas County District Court for 4 years in the juvenile division. I gained many skills from this position: proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, certification to administer the Youthful Level of Service Case Management Inventory (YLS-CMI) on juvenile offenders, manual writing, professional communication and collaboration skills, data entry, filing and records management. It also provided me a great deal of knowledge about the Child In Need of Care (CINC) and Juvenile Offender systems. Additionally, I have experience working with high risk youth through my college internship at a non-profit agency in Kansas City, KS - Young Women On the Move, and from a previous job working as a paraeducator in Salina South High School, where I worked with students who had learning/behavioral/emotional issues.
