Background
About Emily Howard
I use my talents in writing, editing, and marketing to support the missions of causes I care about. WRITING I write a lot—blog posts, website copy, press releases, opinion pieces, mass emails, and long-format thought-pieces. I’ve got a knack for picking up new genres of writing on the fly and for whipping out first drafts that are pretty darn good. EDITING/PROOFING Substantive editing, line editing, or copy editing—this is my element. To me, a piece of writing is like a puzzle—it’s fun to move things around, insert and delete, fiddle and polish until it looks perfect. Most importantly, I make sure that each document is consistent with our organization’s story. STORYTELLING/CONTENT MARKETING I want to tell stories through words and pictures that uplift environmental causes. I’m most excited about content marketing for nonprofits, whether I’m getting my point across with paragraphs of well-wrought prose or with listicles. My background in writing and editing comes in to play here, but to me, storytelling is about more than that—it also involves developing our story with colleagues in development and programs, creating visually inviting content, and listening to the stories our donors, members, and volunteers are telling us. PROJECT MANAGEMENT Teaching, academic work, and communications work have honed my ability to organize and prioritize a project, and to set and meet deadlines for both long and short term projects. PUBLIC SPEAKING/FACILITATION I’ve lead small group discussions, facilitated orientations for 100+ people, conversed with reporters one-on-one, presented my research to audiences at local and national conferences, and defended a dissertation. Speaking publicly on behalf of a cause is something that I happily do. keywords: marketing, communications, online advocacy, inbound marketing, content marketing, nonprofits, environment, library, events, editing, proofreading, writing, public speaking, Wordpress, SALSA, Photoshop, Microsoft Office
