About Emily James

I was called to the Bar in and have specialised in family law since 5 years call. Prior to specializing I had a broad practice in family, civil and crime which provided a solid and invaluable advocacy foundation. Now 25 years call I appear in family courts in and around London and regularly appear in the High Court. I have appeared on a number of occasions in the Court of Appeal. Private Children Act work includes applications of every nature involving child arrangements often with an international or cultural element. I am often instructed in the most complicated of intractable disputes and am frequently engaged in lengthy fact finding hearings and hearings where the child is separately represented. I have been increasingly instructed in complicated cases involving allegations of alienating behaviour. In public law proceedings I act on behalf of local authorities, parents, grandparents and children in a wide range of cases often of a complex nature involving death, fabricated illness, chronic neglect and non-accidental injury. Whilst the majority of my public law work is acting on behalf of parents I am also instructed regularly by local authorities and find the combination of local authority and parent work provides invaluable insight and a strong informed foundation from which to prepare a case. I have significant experience of cases where mental health issues are significant. I have acted on behalf of the Official Solicitor on a number of occasions. I have appeared in many reported cases.
