About Emily MacGillivray

I am a creative, adaptable, and experienced educator who is passionate about active learning, adult learning theory, and other innovative pedagogical and andragogical strategies. I have designed courses in various formats, including in-person, hybrid, and online, using various Learning Management Systems. In my courses, I synthesize information from Subject Matter Experts in engaging, and dynamic interactive formats using strategies like gamification, roleplaying, and narrative. I am experienced in creating and assessing learning outcomes for courses and using the assessments to upgrade course content and user experiences. I coach and advise students on academic success, career pathways, and interpersonal growth. I supervise students' independent projects from end to end. I also teach a variety of in-person one-day, multi-day, and multi-week field trips in the northern Great Lakes, teaching about environmental and sociocultural history. These feature custom-built itineraries and cater to a range of needs, including outdoor skill-building during overnight trips. I'm passionate about the Great Lakes in general. I enjoy learning about them through research and reading. I also enjoy learning about them through exploring, including hiking, paddling, and boating.
