Jubilee Australia's Pacific Mining Program works in partnership with civil society organisations and communities in the Pacific to increase accountability of the extractive sector - in particular, gold and copper mining companies - and to document community concerns about potential impacts to the environment and human rights. Our current projects include: advocating to save the Sepik River (PNG) and the communities who live along the River as the source of their life and culture, from the potential risks posed by the proposed Frieda River mine seeking to protect the marine environment of the Huon Gulf (PNG), and the people who depend on it, from hundreds of millions of tonnes of mining waste being dumped into it over 28 years seeking to work with communities in Fiji who are resisting their marine environments being mined for magnetite supporting the work of civil society organisations and communities in Fiji who have not consented to a major copper mine and hydrodam in Namosi province Previously I was involved in investigating Australia’s Montara oil spill, finding evidence that oil reached Indonesian shores. The subsequent case (Sanda v PTTEP AA (Ashmore Cartier) Pty Ltd) is now the leading authority on transboundary damage in Australia, and settled for close to $200 million.
