Background
About Emily Nero
In November of 2022 I accepted a role as program advisor with one of the government’s Central Agencies, Women’s Equality, with the Policy and Strategic Initiatives unit. As part of Women’s Equality, I specialize in educating and advising other government departments on the application of Gender-Based Analysis Plus through facilitating training sessions, developing training materials, and working with the Social Media team to maintain a presence online. As part of my portfolio, I also co-develop the annual Gender Impact Statement released with New Brunswick’s provincial budget, and I work in a team dedicated to the Pay Equity Bureau. When the Legislature is sitting, I also double as back up legislature coordinator and stay up to date on all matters taking place in the House, ensuring I support the primary Leg. Coordinator when necessary and report back to my Director and Assistance Deputy Minister when needed. I have been a dedicated team member of the government of New Brunswick since June 2020. I assumed the role of primary policy analyst for the intergovernmental Forum of Ministers Responsible for Social Services with the Department of Social Development and worked in that position for just over 2.5 years. In that time, I have gained familiarity and passion for the people of my province and have had several opportunities to build my skills as a competent policy analyst. During my role at Social Development I also served as the Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) champion for the Department and frequently worked with the Women’s Equality to encourage training opportunities for staff. During my undergraduate education, I was Student Diversity Office Coordinator for the Student Affairs department at the University of Prince Edward Island which taught me skills in event and project management as well as the importance of diversity and social inclusion as a framework for both focused and widespread efforts. I continued to grow this mentality when I completed my Master of Public Administration at Queens University, where I had opportunity to engage in several interactive projects, seminars, and case studies which taught me about federal policy, age-friendly policy, foreign policy, current policy challenges and Indigenous governance. My goal has always been to demonstrate a keen and engaging attitude so that I may continue to make a positive difference for my team and the people I serve.
