For 15 years I’ve put that belief into action—listening first, co-designing solutions with frontline crews, then backing them with data and clear systems. From glass furnaces to prisons to marae-based programmes, I’ve learned that safety is about people, relationships and trust long before it’s about check-lists. How I work: Listen & co-create – run Learning Teams, toolbox kōrero and worker-led kaizen so the fixes belong to the people who use them. Lead with care – coach supervisors one-on-one, celebrate near-miss reporting, weave Te Whare Tapa Whā into daily rituals. Connect the dots – turn stories and incident insights into dashboards that speak the board’s language without losing the human picture. Grow capability – mentor HSW advisers, trade knowledge with iwi partners and lift psychological safety so everyone has a voice. What that looks like in practice: Built a cross-site peer network that cut manual-handling injuries 45 % while boosting engagement scores. Guided 8-person HSW team at Corrections NZ to 25 % TRIF reduction by focusing on learning over blame.
