About Emily Scheinfeld

I am currently an associate professor in the School of Communication and Media at Kennesaw State University. I received my PhD in Interpersonal Communication from The University of Texas at Austin in 2016. My research interests center on how adult children and their parents communicate about challenging or difficult health issues, including end of life, genetic testing, alcohol and drugs, and the choice to be a donor. I am interested in examining how familial health communication differs from everyday family communication and the process of disclosure when attempting to seek out social support during these challenging health crises. Understanding these interactions and helping families navigate them is imperative in academic circles, but also to make an impact public health and improve relationships. This work and my skills have been used in research, project management, oral and written communication, research translation, public health, health communication avenues, and advocacy. I have been teaching communication since 2010 covering topics in nonverbal communication, persuasion, interpersonal communication, health communication, professionalism & business, public speaking, basic human communication, and storytelling. Using my expertise and skills from research and the academic world, I build curriculums and hold workshops on public speaking, storytelling, persuasive communication, speech anxiety, and pitch development. I have also developed and held workshops on difficult health conversations for all ages and in varying contexts.Academic Specialties: Family communication, health communication and promotion, specifically as it pertains to talk about challenging topics (weight management, sex, STI contraction, drugs, and alcohol) between peers and with parents, health behavior change, parent-emerging adult communication, disclosure, avoidance, privacy.
