Background
About Emma Cain
Emma Cain has 30 years’ experience in a number of international development roles, across programme management, policy and advocacy, strategy development, evaluation and learning, within development organisations and as a consultant, in Africa, Asia and Latin America. In all of these areas she has pursued rights-based approaches which facilitate the participation, empowerment and agency of those who are at risk of being left behind by development processes, and whose rights are ignored. She has worked extensively on child rights, disability rights, gender equity, inclusion and intersecting inequalities, facilitating participatory processes with teams working on the ground to develop, deliver, evaluate and learn from programmes in these areas. She has also developed a number of practical tools and guidelines to help practitioners evidence the impact of their work on the ground, capturing and using learning to improve work and influence others. Her skills as a trainer on inclusive development have been in demand among mainstream development organisations in the UK. Several consortia (of UK-based and international development organisations from different backgrounds) have engaged her to lead reflection processes, synthesise learning and produce key influencing papers, including submissions to the UK Parliament’s International Development Sub-Committee. She has led a number of strategic consultation and planning processes with INGOs and consortia, where clients report that they have valued her breadth of experience, consultative approach, understanding of the diverse and shifting context of international development, sensitivity in balancing a range of perspectives, clarity of analysis and pragmatism in developing strategic plans.
