About Emma Chapman

I graduated with a Distinction in MSc International Development at Northumbria University, UK, which has equipped me with the theory behind respectful and sustainable development. Therefore, I am keen to apply this knowledge to my career to achieve gender equality and social justice for all.My dissertation identified better strategies to decolonise international development volunteering, through critically analysing eighteen semi-structured interviews with UK volunteers, Team Leaders and sending organisation staff members. My recommendations highlighted the importance of mutual learning (with appropriate training and education), local-led projects, effective preparation, cosmopolitan cross-cultural partnership, and regular reflection and feedback, while allowing for flexibility.Furthermore, I have gained valuable experience out in the field, notably when I volunteered in Serenje, Zambia with VSO on the ICS programme. Over 12 weeks, alongside my team members, I planned and facilitated sessions on various important topics, such as sexual and reproductive health rights, drugs and alcohol and gender-based violence in schools, villages, health clinics and the local prison. We also spoke about contraception options over a local radio show. Every Friday I participated in ‘Active Citizenship Days’ at the office and held a session on the global water crisis. In addition to this, I organised and took part in ‘Community Action Days’, where my team tackled stigma around mental health. Currently, I am looking for community and/or international development opportunities to apply my master's level knowledge, third sector experience and extensive list of transferable skills. I am passionate about development and want to make a positive impact, whether that be within my local community, nationwide, or worldwide.
