About Emma Hellawell

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and currently a Research Fellow at the University of Surrey and a Principal Geo-environmental Engineer at LEAP Environmental. My current area of research is the development of tools to evaluate the carbon footprint of civil engineering processes. Research in this area has included a NERC funded research project as an embedded Digital Researcher working with LEAP Environmental. The NERC project involved developing a digital twin of brownfield remediation which determines the carbon footprint of the remediation process. This followed a project to develop a tool to compare the carbon footprint of pile and strip foundations for residential sites. I was previously a Daphne Jackson Fellow at the University of Surrey investigating levels of contamination (asbestos and BaP) found in soils in Surrey. I have experience of working in local government, the civil engineering consultancy and academia. This has included contaminated land site investigation, local authority Part 2A management, contaminated land planning advice/ regulation and research into pollutant migration and remediation.
