Background
About Emma Johansen
I have a background in historical research, interpretation, and preservation and I'm passionate about the use of archives and the historical record as an activist tool for social justice. I specialize in queer history, public history, and digital humanities, with extensive experience in Omeka, ArcGIS, and Past Perfect. For over two years, I worked as Collections Assistant and Digitization Intern at the Filson Historical Society, where I digitized, cataloged, and exhibited photograph and manuscript collections related to Kentucky and Ohio Valley history. I also administered materials to researchers in the library and special collections reading rooms.I moved to Indianapolis in December 2023 to attend graduate school at Indiana University-Indianapolis. I'm currently a dual master's student in history and library science, with specializations in digital curation and archival management. As part of my University Fellowship, I was the Graduate Assistant and Social Media Fellow for the National Council on Public History. I also worked part-time with the Center for Digital Scholarship in the IUI University Library, where I wrote and edited Wikipedia articles on Indiana LGBTQ history. I now work as Digitization Specialist at the Indiana Historical Society. I'm most passionate about IHS's LGBTQ collections, rare books, oral history cassette tapes, and photographic collections. I love working with metadata, helping researchers, creating digital exhibits, and writing for IHS publications. When I'm not sitting at a desk, my wife and I are trying to keep our two cats out of trouble. We rarely succeed.
