About Emma Ringqvist
I study the adverse effects of viral infections leading to pancreas dysregulation and destruction associated with Type I Diabetes onset, in the research group of Prof. Malin Flodström-Tullberg at Karolinska institutet. We use human samples and mouse models to study viral infection, microbiome impact and innate and adaptive immunity pathways in the development of T1D. Since January 2024 I am working part time in the EU-consortium under the Flodström-Tullberg, Otonkoski and Mallone lab leads investigating enterovirus impact on pancreatic cells and autoimmunity. I have previously devoted many years of postdoctoral research in the molecular immunology of pulmonary obstructive disorders and pulmonary destructive infections, working on Macrophage ontology, pulmonary injury imprinting and Macrophage activity in pulmonary disease. My background is a PhD in microbiology from Uppsala University on host-pathogen interactions on a molecular and cell biology level between the unicellular parasite Giardia and human intestinal epithelial cells.
