About Emma Uber

I am a senior at Indiana University studying journalism, international studies and Spanish. My commitment to academics helped me earn the prestigious Herman B Wells scholarship, as well as become an Ernie Pyle scholar. However, my learning is not limited to the classroom. In fact, some of my most valuable learning experiences stem from my involvement with media organizations — both student and professional. My involvement with professional and campus media has taught me that often the most valuable lessons on justice, accountability and human nature are learned beyond the walls of the classroom. Journalism is rooted in curiosity, offering the opportunity to become a mini-expert on a different topic with each story, ask my infinite supply of questions and connect with people from diverse perspectives. I aspire to hold power to account as an investigative journalist. News organizations have an enduring tradition of combating imbalances of power by giving voice to the voiceless. Additionally, I aspire to be an international bureau chief. By striving to comprehend and convey the cultural nuances underlying international issues, I hope to foster understanding and humanize foreign affairs. My journalism, international studies and Spanish education uniquely prepares me for these careers. I’ve learned to tell stories accurately and ethically in courses like Depth Reporting and Editing, where I attended court hearings, interviewed judges and spent hours with a man as he fought to keep his home. The resulting story on the eviction crisis helped push the Indiana General Assembly to make it possible to expunge eviction from criminal records, as well as helped the story’s subject keep his home. As an international studies and Spanish student, I’ve developed the knowledge to communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds with cultural and linguistic literacy. The plethora of positions I’ve held at the Indiana Daily Student and Michael I. Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism have equipped me with invaluable experience sourcing, interviewing, analyzing data, writing and editing. Finally, my experiences at Indianapolis Monthly and USA TODAY provided me a glimpse into a future full of public records requests, breaking news and countless interviews — and I can’t wait.
