About Emmanuel Stamatakis

Professor of physical activity and population health; an NHMRC Leadership 2 Fellow; Director of the Mackenzie Wearables Research Hub@CPC, and Theme Leader for physical activity and exercise at Charles Perkins Centre (CPC). I received his PhD from the University of Bristol in 2003 and did a post-doctoral in epidemiology at University College London. I lead a program of research examining the health effects of physical activity and sleep using cohort studies and international consortia of wearable device data, including the Prospective Physical Activity, Sitting and Sleep consortium (ProPASS) I established in 2017 and lead, a British Heart Foundation /NHMRC/Cancer Research UK funded international collaboration involving over 40 cohorts with wearables-based data. As of 2024, I have authored over 450 peer-reviewed papers and have been inluded in Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list five times (2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, 2024). I have had involvement in global policy incluing co-chairing WHO’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines Development Group in 2020; and leading WHO's subcommittee that developed the physical activity recommendations for adults. I am currently a Senior Adviser to the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
