Background
About Eric Culver
I have always loved mathematics. When I was in Elementary school, I would check out math books, like Calculus the Easy Way, from the public library and read them in my spare time. When I was in Junior High, I tutored my mother, who was taking classes at SLCC, so she could get a higher score on the math placement exam. With this background, the decision to pursue a degree in mathematics when I first went to Utah State University was an easy one. After graduating from USU cum laude, I went to graduate school in mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver. I am now at the end of that journey, expecting to graduate from the UC Denver in May 2022 with a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Graph Theory. I want to continue my life-long dance with mathematics and would welcome an academic position or an industry position. I also minored in Computer Science while at Utah State, which has helped further my graduate research by allowing me to use computational methods in studying graph coloring problems. As a graduate student, I have had many opportunities to collaborate with various people. Through the Graduate Research Workshop in Combinatorics, Computations were often used in early stages of researching these problems. In particular, my minor when attending Utah State was in computer science, and I have continued to use computational methods in my mathematical research. Twice I participated in the Data to Policy Project Symposium at UC Denver, winning an award once for using computational methods to match up police stations with firehouses in order to better facilitate cooperation for incidents that required both. As a graph theorist, I want to build a cooperative research program with undergraduates and graduates on graph coloring problems. I can teach interested students to program in Python and Sage to help with my research.
