Background
About Eric Douse
Looking back, my journey in the U.S. Army feels more like a series of fortunate moments than anything else. It started with the basics at Fort Jackson and then on to Fort Eustis, learning the ropes as a 15G Aircraft Structural Repairer in South Korea. Honestly, I was just trying to keep up! What surprised me was being entrusted with leadership responsibilities so early on. At 18 months, I was promoted to Specialist, and found myself overseeing two shops. It wasn't about being special, I think, but more about showing up and trying to do the right thing. That period taught me a lot about people, and about myself. Moving to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia, continued that learning curve. The Army really does throw you into situations where you have to adapt, and that's a skill I've found invaluable. It’s probably why civilian companies value military experience. Beyond the daily tasks, the Army opened doors to education. I managed to earn an Associate's degree, and I'm close to finishing my Bachelor's – something I wouldn't have thought possible early on. The mentors I had along the way played a huge role in shaping my approach to leadership. I've had some unexpected achievements, too. Winning those boards, from company to brigade level, and being recognized as the Savannah Chamber of Commerce’s Outstanding NCO of the Year in 2013 was humbling. Graduating as the Distinguished Honor Graduate from my 15G30 ALC and making Commandant List during my recruiter detail were also highlights. My time in Production Control at Fort Hood, TX, was another chapter of growth. Leading teams to achieve Star of the MAR awards and receiving recognition from AMCOM for phase maintenance efficiency felt like a collective win. Now, as a First Sergeant at Camp Zama, Japan, I'm trying to pass on the lessons I've learned. It's about supporting the team and ensuring everyone has the tools they need to succeed. I know I'm standing on the shoulders of those who came before, and I hope to leave a positive impact wherever I go. It's not about big gestures, but about trying to make a difference, one step at a time.
