Colin Powell said,"The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." In my 16+ years in leadership roles, I put people first because the work will always be there tomorrow. I have enjoyed many positions in systems administration, cybersecurity, and instructing. Although I am transitioning out of the military, I currently oversee 70 people conducting defensive cyber operations on the DoD’s Satellite Control Network. In almost 20 years of military service, I have learned the following about myself: I can design and implement system or security solutions from $100K to $8B- The customer and their mission are always the focus- I excel at executing ideas with given constraints- I can’t do it all alone; I seek data before making big decisions. I can coordinate and lead and lead teams- I like winning, but helping the team win is much better- I speak tech, but keep it understandable- I use my experiences to motivate- The buck stops with me. I become better through education and research- I’m always learning because technology is constantly changing- I’m always calm in adversity- High-quality decision making is important to me. As I get ready to retire from the military next year, I look forward to talking about tech, security, jobs, or football.
