About Eric Makela

Eric is the team lead for the Codes and Standards team at Cadmus Group. Eric’s experience in building energy efficiency spans over 30 years and includes work in several different states, India and Abu Dhabi, and 3 U.S. Territories. As an energy educator Eric has worked closely with the building, design, enforcement and manufacturing industry to increase their knowledge of building energy codes, energy efficiency and building science for both residential and commercial buildings. This includes developing and managing training programs tailored around the target audience, providing traditional stand-up classroom style training and in-field “onsite” sessions and assisting states and the U.S. Department of Energy in developing and deploying statewide or nationwide training efforts. As a technical resource, Eric has provided technical support, including research and analysis in several states to increase compliance rates with building energy codes, and has managed studies, and assisted the U.S. DOE in determining compliance rates with energy codes. He has also provided leadership to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building Energy Codes Program Residential Development team. As a collaborator, Eric has coordinated with several national, regional and state organizations to advance energy efficiency through the creation of national collaboratives, development of policy and strengthening building energy efficiency codes. In code development, Eric has collaborated nationally and regionally to gain consensus on proposals to advance efficiency in the codes and has also represented the U.S. DOE and regional groups in the code development process in addition to serving on the ICC IECC Code Development Committee for four cycles. For his work in energy efficiency Eris was a recipient of the 2009 Jeffrey A. Johnson Award and was the 2008 Canyon County Habitat for Humanity Volunteer of the Year.
