About Eric McCalla

The McCallaLab uses combinatorial techniques to efficiently screen materials across broad and complex composition spaces. Our group develops and utilizes high-throughput synthesis and characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy. With both industrial and academic collaborators, we are developing novel materials such as- cathodes for Li-ion batteries - anodes for ultra safe batteries - cathodes for Na-ion batteries - solid electrolytes for all-solid-batteries - complex oxide semiconductors - efficient electrosynthesis of organic molecules We complement the high-throughput approach with detailed mechanistic studies to further understand our novel materials. These studies involve a wide variety of characterization techniques including X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, neutron diffraction and synchrotron XRD. We also collaborate with a number of computational groups who perform Density Functional Theory, Molecular Dynamics and Machine Learning calculations.
