About Eric Scott Mortensen

My professional motivation stems from the ongoing climate crisis and the necessity of our society to collaborate, think critically, and adapt together. I am a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands. My research focuses on developing tools to identify potentials for disaster risk reduction on the global scale to mitigate water-related natural hazards such as riverine flooding and sea level rise. I am an alum of the University of Iowa (BSE Civil & Environmental Engineering '15) and the University of Wisconsin - Madison (MSc Civil & Environmental Engineering '17, MSc Water Resources Management '17). I have extensive experience in hydraulic, hydrologic, and statistical modeling, an advanced understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of global water resources challenges, and a deeply-rooted passion for international development issues. Several industries pique my interest, including catastrophic risk modeling, disaster risk reduction, emergency response and preparation, transboundary water resources management, risk communication, and climate change adaptation.
