About Eric Wait

I’ve always believed that innovation happens at intersections. I've encountered these firsthand between art and science, logic and creativity, persistence and vision. My path thus far has taken me through diverse worlds: from the discipline of military leadership to the creativity of photography, from the precision of aviation to the technical challenges of advanced computing. These seemingly disparate experiences have shaped how I solve problems and lead teams today. Photography taught me to look beyond the obvious, to find patterns and meaning in complexity and noise. Aviation taught me persistence—staying focused on a goal and pushing through regardless of the situation. The Air National Guard instilled discipline, honor, and leadership, showing me how to motivate and guide people even under high-stakes conditions. However, it was in computer science and engineering that I discovered the ideal way to integrate these lessons. After earning my Ph.D. in Electrical/Computer Engineering, I’ve focused on building technologies that transform how we see and understand the world. At Elephas, where I serve as Principal Data Scientist, I lead cross-functional teams to develop GPU-accelerated imaging pipelines, microscope control software, and visualization workflows for cancer therapy profiling. I’ve helped shape product strategy, authored product vision documents, and designed tools that make complex microscopy data both usable and impactful. Previously, at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, I collaborated with top scientists from around the world on cutting-edge biological imaging, creating software solutions that pushed the boundaries of visualization, segmentation, and data analysis. What sets me apart is not just technical expertise (Python, CUDA, C++, ITK, OpenGL, MATLAB, etc.) but the ability to connect disciplines and people. Telling stories and making complex information approachable. Not only do I build high-performance computing solutions, design algorithms, or lead a team through challenging projects, but I also aim to deliver technologies that empower discovery and make a lasting impact.
