Background
About Eric Whitfield
As an educator with experiences ranging from elementary school to postsecondary instruction, some administrative posts at the state, public school and federal levels, along with academic advising, I am positioned to assist students at all levels to first understand academic requirements and thereby enable them to negotiate the system toward successfully achieving scholastic as well as professional goals connected to schooling. Specifically, after teaching grades 4, 5, and 6, I managed “Troops to Teachers (T3),” a Department of Defense initiative to recruit former military members with critical skills to the teaching profession, for the state of North Carolina. T3 was housed in the State Department of Public Instruction (SDPI) in Raleigh, NC; thus, it was a natural transition to the position of personnel analyst for SDPI which included recruitment for T3 and recruiting teachers from other pools, for public school instruction in North Carolina. Wake County Public School System, the second largest system in North Carolina lured me from SDPI to perform as a Senior Administrator of Human Resources to recruit and hire teachers, teacher assistants, as well as assist with other personnel related issues regarding these positions. I began in an adjunct professor position at Valencia Community College’s East Campus just after completing a master’s of science in psychology with an educational psychology concentration. I have taught General Psychology, Adjustment Psychology, and currently teach Developmental Psychology at Baton Rouge Community College after relocating to Baton Rouge in 2010. I worked in general advising while providing psychology instruction and was selected to be the department advisor for Business and Social Sciences majors in 2013.
