About Erik Kolkman

The last couple of years I have been self employed and had a number of clients for whom I programmed web applications. I mostly do this in PHP, Javascript and MySQL/Sqllite. I work best in a bigger environment with colleagues using scrum in an agile project. Documenting and testing is great for the sustainability of your code, so these are techniques that help to get a project running. My last half year assignment for The Bean Machine helped me to realize my strengths, to improve on my coding style and to write code that is transparent and solid. The scrummeetings and agile methodology used at The Bean Machine were key for delivering a solid product suited to the wishes of the client IKNL. For the Tarwegraskoning I build a data infrastructure to connect their real life shop with already existing webshop and their online bookkeeping. For this I build a SOAP interface that sends data to and fro. In the meantime data is processed and synced. During my work at Conrad I improved my skills to write code in PHP and javascript. I've build several tools that enhanced productivity for instance in catalogue production. I've written code that had to pass data over a multitude of systems, servers, layers and through customized firewalls etc. My goal is to use the skills I have in non-profit/society enhancing environments mostly. I love my skills to be challenged so I can grow to new heights. Specialties: I always like to look first what already exists. In contrast to many other companies that want to build a system from scratch that will cost truckloads of money, I like to ease the gaps that exist between systems. For that being able to read code of others is key. But of course sometime it is better to build things from scratch. I will honestly advise that if that is the better option. In such a case I have a network of people that can come to pick up such a project.
