About Erik Nielsen
Erik Nielsen has run an independent research group since 2001, studying molecular mechanisms by which plants synthesize and deposit plant cell walls. Research focuses on a combination of live-cell fluorescence imaging techniques, combined with molecular, genetic, and biochemical techniques to study how cell wall polysaccharides and the enzymes that synthesize them are made and positioned to appropriate cellular locations during plant growth and development. From 2001-2007 this group was located at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri. In 2007, the Nielsen laboratory moved to the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan where Prof. Nielsen is a tenured full professor.
