Background

About Erik Tyrrell

I have a Master's of Science in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. I have 6+ years’ experience in a lab environment. o Analytical chemist with expertise in separation and chromatographic techniques, as well as experience in the development and design of new analytical instrumentation; B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Minnesota o Private sector experience in regulatory science, regulatory submissions, interdisciplinary collaborations across departments (e.g. legal, environmental sciences, field sampling) and contract research organizations (CRO) for analytical testing o Five (5) years of graduate research experience in biochemistry and bioanalytical methods; strong interest in design of experiments, method development and hand-on laboratory activities SELECTED WORK EXPERIENCE Contract Scientist 2021 Cargill • Provided analytical chemistry support for a research and development laboratory focused on polyols and vegetable sourced polymers. My work includes use of ICP AES, GPC, GC FID, dissipation, and wet chemistry tests. • GPC and GC FID troubleshooting problem solving. • Created a GPC peak deconvolution analysis method for use in manufacturing. • Performed tensiometer studies on waxes to evaluate effects of additives on surface tension. Research Assistant 2013-2019 Arriaga Lab University of Minnesota (volunteer 18-19) • Designed and constructed a capillary electrophoresis instrument. This involved design hardware, directing the creation of software, working with parts vendors, assembly of the instrument, construction of components, trouble shooting and testing. This for allowed the lab to perform research of organelles. • Researched and carried out experiments on the generation of reactive oxygen species in mitochondria evaluating new methods of investigating autophagy. • Was the first person to use secondary fluorescent antibodies to label organelles for capillary electrophoresis, laying the groundwork for future research. Teaching Assistant 2011-2016 University of Minnesota Chemistry Department • Wrote materials and prepared experiments to allow hundreds of students to experience performing and understanding analytical chemistry techniques and statistics • Helped senior level students through their first experiences with experimental design and method development • Guided students through analytical chemistry labs helping them both understand a great variety of methods and analyze their results
