About Erika Esterhuizen

I completed my HDE Intermediate Phase and Further Diploma in Education at the Port Elizabeth Teacher’s Training College and Pretoria College for Further Teacher Training respectively. In 2012, I graduated from NMMU with a BEd (Hons). I have been employed at Hoërskool PJ Olivier since 1990, where I became more involved in the technology of the school and taught CAT and IT. In 2013 I have been promoted to HOD: IT. In 2012 HS PJ Olivier suffered the devastating loss of their computer labs in a veld fire and I was faced with the enormous task of starting from scratch. However, the highlight of this event was that within a year a newly built facility equipped with the latest facilities for educational needs was introduced, as well as an e-book tablet system. At St Andrews College, an IEB independent school in Grahamstown, I have been employed as Head of Department: IT from April 2015 until December 2018. I have started to do part-time online courses on MOODLE at the beginning of this year. Here I gained marvelous skills in the management of an Online school as well in Canvas Instructure as an LMS sytem. I am also part-time involved in the teaching of coding classes online for “saschoolcoding” using Scratch and Python for primary learners. I am a natural leader and problem-solving and decision-making skills are part of my personality. Computer literacy skills in MS Office are of my advanced skills. I can work under pressure and independently in a highly rushed environment with the needed accuracy and attention to detail. I was nominated by the Department of Education to represent the Eastern Cape at the Microsoft Innovative Teachers. Forum during August 2010 and 2011. Recently I have been awarded ISPA 2016 TechTeacher of the Year by the CoZa Foundation. In 2017. I have been a finalist of two categories awards during the Eduweek 2017 held in Cape Town: Teacher of Tomorrow and for Lifetime Achievement. Teaching for many years has provided me with the necessary knowledge and experienced to deal with people of varying ages and circumstances. I have teaching experience in an IEB school, NSC and SACAI curriculums and is registered with SACE. I believe that my experience in teaching over the past decades equipped me to be a positive asset in any vacancy.
