Background
About Erin Keating
I am a recent graduate of the Master’s Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN) at the University of San Diego, seeking a new graduate RN position in neonatal or pediatric intensive care. As a nursing student, I completed 1,125 clinical hours, with 436 hours acquired in the pediatric surgical unit, pediatric ICU, and neonatal ICU at Rady Children’s Hospital. I also participated in a 194-hour community health rotation at a school for children affected by homelessness, where I provided health education to students. Through my work as a global health professional, I developed many skills that will translate well into a career as a pediatric nurse. I have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, which I use when interacting with patients, families, nurses, and other members of the interdisciplinary team. My experiences supporting healthcare organizations in low-resource settings have taught me to be adaptable and how to overcome challenging situations. I also have extensive experience working with pediatric populations. Much of my work in Uganda and Tanzania was spent addressing pediatric-specific healthcare needs such as immunizations, malaria/ HIV prevention, and surgical care for congenital conditions. While working with the international surgical organization Operation Smile, I supported the delivery of cleft lip and cleft palate care for infants and young children. While a student at the Hahn School of Nursing, I gained extensive leadership experience. As the Graduate Nursing Student Association President, I led monthly professional development and educational activities, coordinated community service events for USD nursing and health informatics students, and cultivated opportunities to support meaningful interaction among the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science students, faculty, and alumni as well as the greater University of San Diego community and other nursing professionals in the region. In my role as a MEPN Student Ambassador, I coordinated a mentorship program that paired 1st-year students with 2nd-year student mentors and hosted events for both cohorts throughout the year. I also represented my program during open houses, School of Nursing events, and prospective student interviews. As an intern for Sigma Theta Tau, Zet Mu at-Large Chapter, I facilitated community service experiences for nursing students, faculty, and other chapter members with local organizations such as Ronald McDonald House San Diego and the Burn Institute.
