About Erin M.

I am an epidemiologist experienced in coordinating the effective use and communication of public health surveillance data to provide epidemiological guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders. I have successfully directed team operation supporting multiple population health surveillance systems and evaluation efforts for affiliate programs. I have supervised the effective development and management of several key surveillance systems for chronic disease and injury epidemiology such as the Missouri Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and Missouri Violent Death Reporting System. As the Lead Chronic Disease Epidemiologist for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, my team’s work was central to the operations of several additional surveillance systems including the Missouri Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System, County-Level Study, and Missouri Cancer Registry. I have demonstrated experience in project management and development, data surveillance, grant management, quantitative research, and program evaluation. I am familiar with statistical software such as SPSS and SAS, skilled in the management and utilization of large databases, and able to communicate technical information to diverse audiences. My doctorate in medical anthropology explored the biological, social, and environmental factors that shape the disease experiences of historical populations (specifically related to measles, smallpox, and Spanish Flu). My studies were shaped by my interest in the relationships between biology, behavior, and health outcomes, particularly within the framework of social determinants of health. After completing my PhD, I transitioned into public health with the goal of translating my anthropology training and data management skills into a successful epidemiology career. I continue to seek opportunities to apply my knowledge and experience to both current and emerging public health concerns.
