About Erin Thomsen

When I was young I wanted to grow up to be a vet. Not just because that is where my mother worked but it was the only career I was aware of at the time that was aimed at helping living things. Now I know, I could have said doctor or firefighter or police officer, but a vet was more animal and wilderness geared. Through high school I decided I could not work around animals in pain, even if it was to help them. It wasn’t until I began at TRU that I even heard of the Natural Resource Science program, but once I did I knew it was my calling. It combines everything I believe in and am passionate about. I am able to work in the natural world to appreciate its beauty, I am near the living creatures that interact in so many more ways than any one person can understand and most importantly it is a program that will lead me to a career where I can help people. Not in the way I dreamed of as a child but in a whole new way. I can help us save and preserve our home. Too few people understand the magnitude of all our management decisions from how we manage our forests can affect the magnitude of future forest fires to how fertilizing our crops will in the long run decrease the diversity of life in our oceans. What may seem like small decisions could have major impacts to the future of life on this planet. This is the future I would like to be a part of, the one of a sustainable nature. I hope my passion for the outdoors, determination, reliability, and compassion will help me to contribute to a sustainable future and in inspiring others to take action. I am also an amateur photographer and try to show the beauty in the overlooked aspects of nature through my photography.
