About Ernst Logar

Ernst Logar lives in Vienna, Austria. He studied Experimental Design at the University of Fine Arts Linz and Transmedia Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. While employed as lead media technician at Generali Foundation between 1995 and 2003, he begins his artistic engagement with the media of photography, film and sculpture as well as spatial installation works already back in 1995. In his work "Non Public Spaces"(since 1998) Ernst Logar engages with existing power relations as well as historical and socio-cultural phenomena. The deconstruction of social mechanisms and historical truisms – often also connected to his own biography, such as in the works "Den Blick hinrichten"(2004/08) and "The End of Remembering – Carinthian Partisans"(2008) – constitutes a central focus of Logar’s artistic practice. In his recent works, Ernst Logar has dealt with the resource of oil in the project "Invisible Oil"(2008), our present-day concept of money in "Monetary Interventions in Public Space"(2009), the subject of sustainability in "Sustainable Transformation"(2010) and migration in "Welcome to Europe - Insha´Allah"(2012). In "Place of Unrest" Logar (2012-2018) deals with current Austrian history and its culture of remembrance. In his ongoing project "Reflecting Oil: Arts-Based Research"(2019-2023) he rethinks crude oil by engaging with it in its materiality as a chemical mixture and the interconnected dimensions of its role as a geopolitical cause of conflict and pollution and as a sociocultural-object of desire.
