About Essie Bailey

I am drawn to Community Work because it pairs social justice work with praxis. I believe community is an indispensable part of this work, a way to orient our approaches so that all of us - especially the most vulnerable among us - are empowered to become changemakers. Community Work encapsulates the values and goals that drive my career forward. I have dedicated my career to equity and social justice work and to partnering with organizations that share these goals. I started at my first NGO - Kingston Student Housing Cooperative - as an undergraduate student. This experience, in conjunction with my concurrent education in Sociology and Gender Studies, inspired me to pursue social justice work as a career. Since then, I've focused on 2SLGBTQ+ equity and youth education with Canvas Programs, a charity based in Toronto. While this focus area feels true to me today, I'm open to exploring other facets of community work as I progress in my career.
