About Etienne Caruana

Mr Caruana joined the National Statistics Office (NSO), as a statistician, in In 2005, Mr Caruana was appointed as manager of the Living Conditions, Population and Culture Statistics Unit. In 2009, Mr Caruana took the position of Director of Social and Regional Statistics, a position which he still holds until the present date. Mr Caruana is a member of Directors of Social Statistics Working Group and now, as Acting Director General, is also a member of the European Statistical System Committee. Mr Caruana is highly experienced in the collection and production of official statistics, having coordinated different projects at NSO including, amongst others, the launch and running of the European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions Survey, the Household Budgetary Survey, the Population and Housing Census and business surveys. He is also highly familiar with the European Statistical System having been directly involved and contributed in many European projects involving the production of official statistics. During the first half of 2017, Mr Caruana acted as a technical expert on social statistics during Malta's Presidency. During the past years, Mr Caruana has also worked as key expert and assisted foreign Statistical Institutes launch national full-scale projects designed to collect harmonised statistics at European standards. Mr Caruana also carried out two Sector Reviews on the Labour Force Survey in Egypt and Israel.
