Background

About Etienne van der Klashorst

I am a registered Professional Engineer with building industry endorsement as a Structural Engineer. I have a master’s degree in Structural Engineering, and I am a lifelong learner. I have in-depth knowledge of the behaviour and design of structural steel and concrete buildings. My experience includes the design and construction supervision of commercial buildings, industrial facilities, bridges as well as other structures for civil infrastructure. Before joining Aurecon, I was employed as a full-time lecturer at Stellenbosch University where I taught undergraduate courses on structural design (steel and concrete) as well as the use of the Finite Element Method for Structural Analysis. During this time, I also did extensive research on the design of cold-formed steel structures, structural optimisation and structural reliability. In my spare time I like to play around with computer programming, which has lately led me to explore the Rust language. I am inspired by the exactness of algorithms, which is very much in line with some of the requirements for being a structural engineer. On the other had I see structural engineering as an art which only improves with time spent practising.
