About Etta Brooks

I am a senior at Augustana College studying Sociology and Psychology. I chose sociology and psychology because I love to learn about people and social institutions. My career goal is to conduct research on issues that inform national public policy as well as participate in implementing programs that cater to underserved communities. I am especially interested in women’s safety and empowerment, youth education, social psychology, and national development. A few years ago in Liberia, I was that little girl that used to braid the community kids’ hair for school and served as their study class teacher. Today, I am that young woman who will soon be receiving her Bachelor’s degree (and now braids her College friends’ hair). I do not perceive my story as sorrow to glory but from dream to reality. I wanted to obtain a quality education, and through hard work, perseverance, and the right support system, I am realizing my dream. I believe that there are so many ambitious young people in Africa who with the right resources also have the potential to realize their dreams. Through the Lift Liberia scholar program at SMART Liberia, I received leadership, global mindset, and social entrepreneurship training. Additionally, I received mentorship to apply to colleges abroad, and financial support throughout my four years at Augustana College in the USA. During my time at Augustana, I have received valuable mentorship, resources, and research experience. I have been able to identify and clearly define my career path and most importantly, the path I need to take to achieve my career goals. I am planning to attend a graduate program in social research and analysis or policy evaluation to prepare me for a career in policy research.
