Background

About Ettore de Lellis

I combine technical knowledge in autonomous and avionics systems with a strong foundation of project management, soft and inter-personal skills, and intuitive and attentive stakeholders’ engagement ability. Throughout my career, I have always been driven by the legacy of innovation, novelty and improved safety. I am thrilled to be involved in the visionary Lilium’s challenge to make air taxis available to everyone and as affordable as riding a car. In Lilium’s matrix organization I have two roles contributing on both the functional and the program side of the matrix. • Engineering Manager for the Avionics & Autonomy Systems Engineers in the Electronic & Electrical functional department, with direct supervision of a wonderful group of engineers • Avionics Lead Systems Engineer, leading and coordinating the integrated project team working on the Core Avionics System of the future Lilium Jet. This system includes three main sub-systems: Communication Navigation and Surveillance System, Vehicle Management System, and Cockpit Display System. Previously, I built my competencies in my 15-year experience in the Italian Aerospace Research Center and in my 3-year experience as Director of Advanced Technologies Research and Development at Aspen Avionics. In Aspen, I managed the company’s program for developing innovative avionic products, aiming to improve flight safety and simplify key tasks of General Aviation (GA) pilots. I am co-inventor of the award-winning Aspen Evolution Angle of Attack technology (USPTO Patent). My education and professional certifications are a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, a Master’s Degree in Electronic Engineering, and a PMP certification. My background includes 20+ publications in journals or conferences on GNC and UAV and 50+ publication reviews as AIAA Technical Sensor Committee Award Chair. Main areas of expertise are Avionics, Guidance, Navigation including Performance Based Navigation (PBN) and Required Navigation Performance (RNP) concepts, Air Traffic Management (ATM) and Air Traffic Network (ATN), Situational Awareness, Sense and Avoid (SAA aka DAA), Auto Landing, Sensor Fusion, Model-based design, Rapid Prototyping, HW-In-the-loop (HIL aka HWIL) simulations, UAS/UAV/RPAs/Drones.
