About Eugen Mattes

Dr Eugen Mattes is a Consultant Occupational & Environmental Physician and Epidemiologist. Dr Mattes is an Approved Medical Specialist (AMS) with WorkCover, Western Australia and a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME) with the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners. He is also a Certified Medical Review Officer (MRO) and member of the Australasian Medical Review Officers Association. Having graduated from the University of Western Australia (UWA) in 1989 with his Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, Dr Mattes went on to attain his Masters of Public Health (1995) and PhD (2004), both also from UWA. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor, School of Medicine and Pharmacology at UWA. Dr Mattes has worked in occupational medicine for 10 years undertaking assessments in fitness for work, permanent impairment, complex case review, workers compensation, rehabilitation and health surveillance. He has a special interest in complex cases involving medical, surgical, mental health, and drug and alcohol issues often requiring a multidisciplinary approach. He has provided scientific, clinical, policy and medico-legal advice to a variety of corporations and insurers, particularly in the mining, oil & gas sectors, service and health industries. Dr Mattes also consults to State and Federal Government Departments. As an epidemiologist and having attained his MPH and PhD, Dr Mattes was awarded an NHMRC postdoctoral fellowship to Columbia University in New York (2004 - 2006).
