PhD in English with 7+ years experience teaching undergraduates, high school students, and graduate students, in courses on composition, literature, creative writing, linguistics, cognitive science, environmental studies, and pedagogy. I am passionate about the power of literature, education, and communications to contribute to the work of social change. As a scholar, I am driven by the question: how does literature work, and what work might it do? My dissertation,"What Poetry Makes Happen," synthesizes research in poetics, cognitive linguistics, and neuroscience in order to explain how poetic language guides imaginative experiences in readers' brains. By applying this interdisciplinary poetic theory and novel methods of analysis, I make a plausible case for the potential social values of poems engaging topics of ecology, racism, and disability.
